Cowie Primary School was opened in August 1886 as the village developed after the opening of the local coal mine, Bannockburn Colliery.  It was later extended in 1905 and 1911, and eventually accommodated both primary and junior secondary departments.  The buildings are single storey stone and brick built, linked by a corridor.  A new entrance and reception area was built in 2005.  The newly refurbished Nursery opened on February 13 2008.  The Early Years classes and admin corridor have been recently refurbished.

The school and nursery were inspected by HMIe in March of 2008.
